這 首歌出自桑岱姆的百老匯音樂劇經典「小夜曲」（A Little Night Music），而由於這首歌的成功，也使得他正式的躋身當代音樂劇大師之林。在國際上，或許桑岱姆的知名度遠遠比不上安德魯洛伊韋伯（Andrew Lloyd Webber），但是在百老匯的音樂劇世界裡，他卻被公認是70年代以來最重要的作曲家，主要原因並不是他的作品有多受歡迎，而是他勇於創新的魄力。他是率先把「概念音樂劇」（也有人認為應該說成「反音樂劇」）帶入百老匯的名家，通常都親自包辦填詞與譜曲，得獎對他來說是家常便飯，可是他的戲卻往往不是一般習慣於傳統音樂劇流暢風格的人士所能輕易接受的。
桑岱姆早在50年代就以「西城故事」（West Side Story）和「玫瑰舞后」（Gypsy）的歌詞嶄露頭角，並因而與製作大師哈洛德普林斯（Harold Prince）建立起密切的合作關係。1973年因「小夜曲」劇中的「Send in the Clowns」被大眾接受，而成了他的第一首「招牌」歌曲。
